Can you really make money with plastic bottles? My girlfriend once told me, on stepping into Ibadan, that Ibadan is a dirty place compared to Akure. That got me thinking until recently when it occurred to me that that in itself is a business idea.

Now if you are acquainted with business, you will realize that business idea don’t always come when you sit down and designate a time to think up one. It just jumps into your thought when you are doing something, or probably nothing, or as a result of a happening or a situation.

So, I went on to think of things that one can use plastic bottles for, and make cool cash, instead of merely throwing them into the recycling bin or on the ground. And I came up with a few ideas. Ready to launch? Let’s do this.

Collect bottles



You could get kids or wondering children to get them for you in exchange for a token. You could also get them by yourself, or talk to shop owners to keep used bottles for you, then get them every weekend.

Sell to a Recycling buyer



Look for a recycling buyer that purchases plastic bottles in bulk, or people who might be interested in them. Negotiate with them on how much you get for supplying a certain quantity.


Mini Garden



Make a mini garden out of the plastic bottles. While this won't be a fast way to make money, it can be a long-lasting one. Plant small herbs in the bottles and pinch off the results into small baggies. Sell fresh spices and herbs at markets, and then replenish your supply as it continues to grow.


Storage


More than 90% of these plastic bottles are mainly used for reselling locally made beverages such as Kunu Zaki, Zobo, Kunu Aya (made from tiger nut), Fura-da-Nunu (made from cow milk), insecticides and local roots popularly called Agbo in Yoruba. While going around picking these dirty plastic bottles by scavengers seem dirty, dirty money doesn’t smell when it comes to buying food and other essentials in the market; it is a survival strategy.

Decoration and Designs



Most of the plastic bottles thrown away are useful craft materials that no one thinks about. If you are creative and inclined to designs and art, your perspective of it will invariably change. You will their use in decorating your sitting room, bedroom, kitchen, hall and even backyard. And definitely, you can commercialize it and make money from it.

Home Equipment



From plastic bottles, you can make home equipment such as broom, cups, containers, etc. And if you are good at it you could change its entire look that one would doubt if it is a plastic bottle.
